Tigers Find Their Teeth Against Eagles

Raleigh | NC - 07/17/2010 - On July 17, the North Carolina Tigers hosted the #3 Baltimore-Washington Eagles at the Tigerdome. It was a game that matched up a veteran Eagle team that has had the wood on the Tigers in recent years, but as it turned out, history changed as much as the weather did during the game. The Tigers, coming off a couple of disappointing narrow defeats, pulled off the upset with a very even team effort defeating the Eagles 10.5.65 vs 7.8.50.

The first 10 minutes saw both teams apply intense pressure and hard tackling, resulting in trading of only a goal each and a narrow 1 point lead for the Eagles. Ross Pleban set the tone early for the Tigers at center half back with some tenacious tackling and rebounding of numerous Eagles attacks. During the time Pleban was leading by example, his team mates in the back line raised their efforts to shut down any Eagle advances. In the meantime, the forward line, led by Jason Heathcote and Scott Bradley started to find some openings in the solid Eagle defense in the final ten minutes of the first quarter to open up a handy 4.2.26 to 1.1.7 lead.

After a strong start by the Tigers, the Eagles showed why they came in as the #3 team in the country as they showed their resiliency when they increased their work rate during the second and third quarters. The intensity by both teams continued during these periods with hard tackling and some impressive passages by both teams in spite of the heavy pressure. At half time the Eagles had reduced the margin to 6.3.39 to 4.2.26 with plenty of time to play. The margin was further reduced in the third quarter with the three quarter time score having the Tigers leading by a meager two points, 7.3.45 to 6.7.43.

The fourth quarter promised to be a ripper, and both teams did not disappoint. First blood was drawn by the Eagles in the first minute of the quarter, giving them their first lead since early in the first quarter. It was do or die time for the Tigers and time for them to figure out the real character of the team. In addition to Pleban, Heathcote, and Bradley, the likes of Paul Duncan, Dennis Kurtz, Adam Barabasz, Brien Blandford, John Sculls, Adrian Baluyot, Wes McCallister, Wes Hauytin, Mick Coysh, Patrick Washington, Matt Beyersdorf and Alex Klaus really stepped up in crunch time to shut down the Eagles. As a result, the Tigers went on to kick the final three goals of the match to notch their first win of the season.

While the weather wasn't so fan friendly going from shower - sunny - sauna - overcast and finally a downpour in the final minutes of the game, the display by both teams was great entertainment as proved by the crowd staying throughout. Scott Bradley's effort throughout all four quarters gave him a well deserve best on ground honor, but it was not without plenty of company challenging for that recognition.

The Tigers will be looking to continue this form on August 28 against the team from Florida. Stay tuned for more information about the location of the game.

Tigers Fall Just Short In Scorching Conditions

Raleigh | NC - 06/26/2010 - Philadelphia Hawks shut out North Carolina Tigers in fourth quarter to pull off stunner by just three points...
Match report coming soon...

Tigers Return From Road Trip

Philadelphia | PA - Well, what a weekend! Travel, 16 players, 2 games, and a great social event with our fellow Aussie Rules competitors to top it off. Two games in Philadelphia started officially started the season. The games were going to introduce some challenges with 16 Tigers available, a number playing their first game of AFL, and regulars filling spots they wouldn't normally fill if a full contingent was available for selection.

The first game against New York was always going to be a tough battle with a full list representing the Magpies, five games under their belts, and a bad mood following them after their last match. We played with enthusiasm, vigour and intent but couldn't quite match the skills and performance of the Magpies. The Tigers displayed some good passages of ball movement at times and our two goals, one in their Tiger debut (Bobby), came from very effective ball movement and teamwork. The endeavour from the newer players was a pleasure to watch. Although all tried their best and gave it their all, certain stand out players include: Adam B(1st game), Steffy, Skulls, Rob SM, Paul, Pat W, and the Lee brothers. While the final score was 81-12, it was good to get the ball in the hands again in an actual match.

The second game against Florida was fantastic to play in, everyone knew what to expect and was keen to get into it. We matched up quite well with Florida and attacked the ball with great passion. There were some good passages of play again, leads were good, everyone was confident and had a real go at the ball. The talk was up and people were playing the team game. Some unfortunate kicking for the Floridians at the start kept the Tigers in it, and some unfortunate kicking for the Tigers kept them from getting their first win for the season. Standout players for this game include: Gavin(2nd game), Skulls, Adam B(2nd game), Rob SM, Mick, Paul, and Steffy. The final score being 23-16 (a goal in the final seconds increasing the margin from 1 point) left the Tigers 0-2 at the end of the day.

While the results were not ideal, there is a ton of positives that we can take away from the weekend: We blooded some new blokes that will provide us additional depth throughout the season and put pressure on the veterans to work for their spots, we all got some cruicial game time to get the season underway, and we got to experience the social side that compliements the greatest sport on earth. At the award presentation that evening, Rob Sayre-McCord was awarded our Most Valuable Player for the weekend.

We are looking for more positive results when we play Philadelphia in Morrisville on June 26th.

Thanks

-Coach Mick Coysh

Tigers 2010 Season Training Begins

Raleigh | NC - G'day Boys,
Well the first training is under the belt and the rust has been blown away (partially). It was good to see about 22-ish people out on Saturday, especially the 5 new guys who came. It seemed like they had been here before, the way they were welcomed and mixed it up with the rest of the blokes. It was great to get hands and feet back on the ball again.
Stuart Gill is the Assistant Coach and will be in charge at trainings/games that I cannot attend. He will also running drills at trainings that I am attending too.
The players who have been around for a couple of years or more will be getting called on to show more leadership at trainings as well as during the games too - Be prepared!
As told to the blokes who were there, I am more of an old-school kind of coach. I will be rewarding the fella's who make the commitment to get to training (you train, you play - simple as that!). The website has the updated calendar for trainings and games - check it out!
Scratch ya at next training (bring water/drink)
-Coach Mick Coysh

Tigers Give Wood to Needy

Raleigh | NC - Four members of the NC Tigers showed up at Jimmy Everett's Tree Service to chop wood for Warmth for Wake on February 13th. Although organized at the last minute, Paul Duncan, Ross Pleban, Daniel Nordstrom and Wesh Hayutin combined their tools and skills to help those in need.
Warmth for Wake meets every other weekend over the winter to chop and deliver wood that'll held heat homes for those who cannot afford it. Fitting for the weekend, snow happened to be falling all morning while nearly a dozen guys loaded trucks as fast as possible. It was a very labor intense three hours, but none the less a great workout for the upcoming footy season, as well as a great reason to get moving on a Saturday morning.
"I really enjoyed getting out here and helping out the community. Although my back will be sore tomorrow, it is definitely worth it," said Wes Hayutin.
The Tigers will hopefully participate in the three upcoming WFW events. If you would like to join us or learn more about it, visit the website below.

Tigers run 6th annual Krispy Kreme Challenge

Raleigh | NC - Multiple Tiger players took part in the Krispy Kreme Challenge held February 6th. With a chance of snow in the forecast, it did not stop anyone from showing up for a chance to devour a dozen doughnuts in the middle of a morning workout. The challenge consist of running from the NC State University bell tower to the Krispy Kreme shop in downtown Raleigh. After making this 2+ mile trek, participants are each given a dozen doughnuts to eat as quickly as possibly, capped off by making their way back to the starting line. The only three official reports that have come in are from Brian Steffy eating 10 doughnuts, Paul Duncan eating 6, and Wes Hayutin eating 2.
NC Tiger President, Paul Duncan, participated in the challenge for the first time this year and had this to say, "I really had no idea how difficult it would be to eat 12 doughnuts. I tried smashing a couple together at a time to go down quicker, but it really didn't help. My stomach can only handle so much sugar."
Everyone had a great time, even if found on the site of the path feeding animals with previously eaten doughnuts. There was even a confirmed sighting of a streaker. It was a great event for a great cause and the Tigers were proud to be apart of it. The previously set record for the Tigers still stands, Patrick Badolato finished all 12 doughnuts and the run in 36 minutes.

Tigers Have Roller Coaster Ride of a Weekend

Mason | OH - Although Tigers failed to get a win, they fought gallantly and came away from the weekend feeling good about the effort that was put forward. They can't always control whether they win, but they do control how they go about trying to win. Losing a heartbreaking match by two points to Nashville, and being beat convincingly by San Diego and a strong Milwaukee side still did not manage to break the mighty Tigers' morale or sense of mateship. A number of players shone at Nationals, and each member of the team helped lift each other collectively and there was no one who did not contribute in some way or the other. The Tigers now look forward to the end of year Awards Gala, the first annual golf tournament, and hibernation in the off season.

Golf Tourney at Lochmere

To celebrate this inaugural event, there will be many prizes and free gifts given away to the participants.

Second Black v. White Match

Raleigh | NC - Last weekend the NC Tigers took the field, against themselves. Coach Jason Heathcote divided the team into two competitive sides for the second of three black verse white games this year. With a turnout of 28 physically able players, two teams of fourteen took the field. Heathcote divided the teams, in his usual fashion, of talls (in black) verse smaller quicker players (in white).

The game began as a mudslide with the white team taking control from the beginning. With goals by Ross Pleban, Wes McCallister and two by Jordan Lee, the first quarter was quickly over, soon after starting. It was not until half way through the second half when Mick Coysh scored the black team's first goal, which proved to be little help as the white went on to score two more goals by McCallister and one more by Lee.

Half time:
Black 1.8 14
White 7.7 49

The third quarter proved to be more of the same, with the white team going on to score five goals. Again, McCallister kicked two goals, as well as new comer Brian Blanford, with Brian Steffy adding one more. The black team did capitalize on the two opportunities given to them with goals by Stuart Roe and Paul Duncan.

Three quarter time:
Black 3.9 27
White 12.8 80

In the fourth quarter, a combination of the legs being worn down on the white team and key players at key positions finally gave the black team the thrust Coach Heathcote was looking for from his black team the whole day. With Patrick Badolato starting the scoring campaign, Paul Duncan followed with four goals, Albert Neimeyer with 2 goals and Heathcote with one goal. It was the type of slaughter the black team had endured the previous three quarters. The black team just put themselves in a bit too big of a deficit to overcome in a single quarter. Coach Heathcote still has not been able to put together a winning team for his side, but with one more black/white game this season, there is still hope.

Final score:
Black 11.11 77
White 13.10 88

Goal Scorers:
Black: Duncan 5, Neimeyer 2, Coysh, Badolato, Heathcote, Roe
White: McCallister 5, Lee 3, Blanford 2, Pleban, Kurtz, Steffy

Tigers bring home a Philly 'W'

Philadelphia | PA - The Tigers took to the road this past weekend for back to back away games against Philadelphia and DC. The Tigers have had the Philly Hawks number the past few years and were feeling confident going into the game. With 23 players traveling up to Philly, the Tigers were ready to claim their first victory of the year. From the opening bounce the boys hit Philly hard, with great determination at the ball and an uncompromising desire to gain possession. Stuart Gill started the avalanche of goals when he slotted through the first for the club and the team never looked back staying in front all day. 6 Tigers scored goals with multiple efforts coming from Jason Heathcote, Wes McCallister, and Ross Pleban. Philly fought hard all day but the day belonged to the Tigers. Final scores 67 points to Philly 51.

The second game of the weekend saw the Tigers travel down to Washington DC to take on #2 Baltimore/Washington DC Eagles. After the bruising game the day before this was always going to be a tough ask for the traveling side. After surveying the ground by taking a spin around the surrounding raceway, the boys started the game in a fighting fury. As the game wore on, the Tigers lost their grip on the game and the floodgates opened late in the second half to blow the score well beyond the Tigers grasp. In a rare highlight for the game John Scull kicked his first goal for the club. Newer players Israel Abitbol and Patrick Washington were other notables performing exceptionally well against far more experienced opposition.

It was a fun weekend for the team. The bruises and general soreness will subside but the win will not. The Tigers next game is an intraclub affair with the traditional Black v White Jersey clash taking place July 18th at 2 PM. All interested players, as well as family and friends and supporters are invited to come out and participate in the practice match.

Florida United Downs Traveling Tigers

Ft. Lauderdale, FL - The NC Tigers traveled to sunny Florida for a game against Florida United. The Tigers weren't sure what to expect from the newly created Florida side, United being an amalgamation of three old Florida clubs. All Florida players were keen to come out against the respected Tigers side since only a few games are scheduled down in Florida this year. In stifling heat, Florida had the advantage and came out strong to build a lead in the first two quarters. The Tigers were playing well but having a small interchange of reserves and missing a few key players hurt the club. At half time, the Tigers were shocked by the score board and committed to giving 100% in the third term. In the third quarter the Tigers finally fired on all cylinders, kicking 5 goals and bringing the score level. To Florida's credit their men hung tough and kicked on in the forth quarter to run out winners.

Florida 12.15.87
NC 08.08.56

Tiger Kim Hemenway Dominates Women's League

Milwaukee | WI - The NC Tigers own Kim Hemenway played for the NY female Magpies this past weekend. NY were part of a 4 team tournament being hosted by the Milwaukee Lady Bombers. In the first game Kim kicked the entire teams score of 3 goals, proving her worth to her new club immediately. In a rough game, Kim consistently marked and tackled well, witnessing one girl dislocating her arm...twice. In Game 2, Kim was shifted to the center position and helped NY beat Dallas 64-16. Kim had one goal and assisted in a number of others. In the third and final game, NY came up against the more experienced Atlanta outfit. Kim again lead the charge scoring the only NY goal but it wasn't enough as Atlanta ran out winners. In her first outing in front of the National team selectors, Kim impressed. On a number of occasions Kim was forced to almost kick to herself, run on, and repeat, moving the ball up field single-handily. In suspicious circumstances, Kim was not awarded MVP of the tournament but we congratulate her and thank her for representing the Tigers so well!

Tigers Prepare For Road Trip Double-Header

Raleigh | NC - The Club is preparing for one of its most ambitious road trips ever outside of Nationals. The team travels to Philadelphia July 11th to tackle the Philly Hawks and then turns south and competes against the Balt./Wash. Eagles July 12th. The double header will be a test for the Tigers squad. It will also be a fun trip with some social activities planned for the Saturday night! There are a few spots left for players to be part of this weekend so contact the coaching staff now to inquire.

New York Game Recap

Raleigh, NC | USFootyNews.com - On Saturday June 13, the No. 3 New York Magpies (2-0) travelled to North Carolina to take on the North Carolina Tigers (0-2). At game time, the mercury was closing in on 100F out on the field. At the get go, the Magpies attacked the ball through the likes of Joel Daniher. However, they were not able to get their first goal until half-way through the first quarter and the Tigers were able to respond through the big man, Jason Heathcote, a few minutes later. At the quarter it was pretty even on the score board, if not on the field. New York 1.5 (11) to North Carolina 1.0 (6).

New York started to gain some control of the game in the second quarter, putting on two goals and James Hawkins starting to make his mark on the game. North Carolina was able to respond with a goal to Steve Miller but New York added another to end the quarter. At the half it was New York 4.5 (29) to North Carolina 2.2 (14).

Things started to look up for the Tigers after half. Ross Pleban was working hard at Center Half Back to keep the Magpies forwards under control. The Tigers were able to bring the ball out of defense with Paul Duncan and move it into their forward line of Jason Heathcote and Wes McCallister, but only Heathcote was able to get the majors. The Magpies were able to answer and move further in front. New York 7.6 (48) to North Carolina 4.3 (27).

In the last quarter, with both teams tiring, the Magpies unit was able to pull out in front and get a solid win on the road. New York 12.10 (82) to North Carolina 6.4 (40).

According to Magpies Head Coach, Rob Oliver, "This was a hard earned win for NY with the Tigers competitive all the way. NY blooded a number of new Non Australian players over the past two rounds including Joe Dimaio and Nick Walker who scored goals in this match. It was pleasing to get away with a win. The Tigers are a very competitive unit and hard to play against at home. They are well coached by Jason and a big win is not far away. I was pleased with our team, we ran out the game well in extremely hot conditions and persevered with our game plan. Chris Norman was great at full back and Daniher the outstanding player on the field. Jason Heathcote for NC was a thorn in our side all day and played a great game, he is an outstanding mark and kick for goal. We look forward to our contest with the Eagles in NYC in 2 weeks."

Tiger Coach, Jason Heathcote, was please with what he saw. "We did play well against NY. We took it to them, unfortunately we just could not sustain the effort long enough to take the lead. We are definitely improving in some areas we are focusing on this year like aggression towards the ball and marking."

Tigers Return from Philly

Philadelphia | PA – The NC Tigers took to the open road hunting for their first win of the year this past week. The destination was Philly PA, and, they had the Boston Demons and Baltimore/Washington DC Eagles in their sites.

In the newly formed Eastern Conference Tournament, the Tigers had a chance to play two top teams in one day. The tournament also gives all Eastern USAFL teams the opportunity to scope out each other before the regular home and away season commences. In attendance were the New York Magpies, Boston Demons, Baltimore/Washington DC Eagles, the NC Tigers, and the hosts: the Philadelphia Hawks. A smattering of women’s teams from across the east coast was also present.

The first game of the day was also the Tigers first game of the season. They took on the Boston Demons who finished the prior season ranked #6 in the country. The Tigers took the field with a number of new players but also high levels of excitement and confidence. The first quarter was an even affair with much of the time spent by both clubs feeling each other out. The strong wind aided the Boston Demons though some good passages of play helped the Tigers stay competitive and within striking distance.

The second quarter saw much of the same style of play. The Demons were ultra competitive, making the Tigers earn every possession. A couple of goals by Wes McCallister up forward helped the score stay close and the Tigers were encouraged going into the half time break. The third quarter was a good one for the Tigers. The newer players found their footing and the youthful exuberance proved useful as endurance levels dropped. Towards the end of the quarter the Demons showed their class and quick goals at the end of the period helped the Demons keep the lead for the quarter and the rest of the game. Final scores were North Carolina 8.13.61 to Boston 13.12.90.

Baltimore/Washington DC was going to be a challenge for the weary Tigers in game two. They were, and remain the number #1 team in the country and showed many reasons why they have achieved that place. The Eagles outclassed the Tigers all over the ground for much of the game. There were bright spots for the Tigers, namely the emergence of some of the club’s younger players, but on the whole the game was a lesson on how to play superb team footy. In a shortened game, the Tigers only managed a single goal whereas the Eagles slammed home 8 to run out comfortable winners. Afterwards, the Tigers coach (Jason Heathcote) said “This game was a great learning experience for us. It helped us get some miles in our legs, take a few bumps, and readied us for the long and hopefully successful season ahead.” President Paul Duncan added “It was fantastic to see so many of our players present here in Philly. We had the most players and spectators here at the venue which is a great sign for the Club.” Final scores were North Carolina 1.0.6 to Baltimore/Washington DC 8.4.52.

First B/W Game of 2009
Raleigh | NC - May 17th - After a long winter and two hard months of training, the NC Tigers finally took the field this past Sunday for the clubs first interclub match. Two full teams of 18, teammates versus teammates, squared off to polish skills and have some fun before heading to Philadelphia in a couple weeks for the clubs first real test. This was the first of a few intraclub games held in 2009, and, since its inception the Black versus White Jersey clashes have become a club favorite. Coach Jason Heathcote divided the Tigers into two competitive teams creating key match ups he wanted to witness before Philadelphia. Paul Duncan led the White team to a narrow two point victory over Wes McCallister's Black team. Final score was 60-58.

There have been great turnouts to preseason practices since mid March and Sunday was no exception. Even with rain covering Raleigh all weekend, 36+ players fronted Sunday for the first game. Come game time, 2pm, it was 70 degrees with light rain. Throughout the game, the rain picked up with the temperatures dropping. Many of the Tigers reported it bringing back "bad weather memories of Nationals in Colorado last year."

Right from the opening bounce, Brian Zimorowicz took control of the ruck for the White team and 45 seconds later Paul Duncan scored the first goal of the Tigers season. Newcomer Scott Fairweather showed his knowledge of the game, taking control of the White team's front line, scoring two goals, and keeping the ball in their forward half nearly the entire quarter. Heathcote and Wes McCallister hooked up twice in the first quarter to keep the Black team from getting run out of the game. Q1: Black - 2.0 - 12, White 4.2 – 26.

Starting the second quarter the teams changed ends and the same goals proved just as popular. After a motivational speech by McCallister and Heathcote at quarter time, the Black team came out in a furry spreading the love between Heathcote, Patrick Washington and Ben Sweet. This time it was the Black team making troubling the scorekeeper while the white team only answered once with a goal from Daniel Nordstrom. Q2: Black - 5.4 - 34, White 5.2 – 32

After the White seeing their lead disappear they came out ready to go in the third quarter. Alex Klaus started out with the first White goal, followed by Lars Jarrko and Fairweather. The Black team kept their poise and fought back down field to get the ball to full forward McCallister for another goal. Just before the horn Ben Wetzel added another for the Black team to rally within striking distance and set up a tight last quarter. Q3: Black - 7.5 - 47, White 8.5 – 53

With such an evenly matched, back and forth game thus far, it would only be right to continue along the same path. The Black team came out in a storm, dominating the ball and shots for goal, however, could not kick straight. Kicking just 1.4 in the first 15 minutes of the quarter, they had again taken a narrow lead. With four minutes left in the game, the White team kicked their final goal which proved to be the straw the broke the camel’s back. McCallister kicked one final behind to cap off the closest Black/White game in history. Q4: Black - 8.10 - 58, White 9.6 – 60

Unfortunately for the head coach, Heathcote, he has still not been able to rig the teams to where he has been on the winning side, but did have this to say after the game, "I'm most impressed with the new players. They showed great knowledge of the game and the physicality to match. We have picked up a few great recruits this year which will help us be the most competitive Tigers team in the history of the club."

Club president, Duncan added, "Not only are the new players picking it up so quick, our second year players have made leaps and bounds of improvement. One thing that is sometime lacking with the new guys is their physicality, many do not have enough, and some have too much. However, in the game today, I was impressed at how well everyone got after the ball and other players, legally."

TIGERS START PRESEASON...SORT OF
A brave group of Tigers recently decided to pound the pavement in the name of charity and compete in the 2009 Krispy Kreme Challenge. This Raleigh tradition brought over 5,000 runners together to compete in the four mile race. The trick to this running race, and how it got 5 Tigers out of bed so early, is that runners start on the North Carolina State University campus, run two miles to the landmark Krispy Kreme store, consume 12 donuts, then run the two miles back finishing at the iconic NCSU bell tower. Before the race started, Tigers players gathered amongst the large crowd, Albert Neimeyer dressed in full NC Tigers garb. He looked silly. Most players took about an hour to complete the challenge and none had the misfortune of their donuts making a re-appearance. Afterwards, every player swore they would never do the challenge again but it remains to be seen whether the allure of a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts will bring some Tigers out of hibernation again.

Post Season Awards and Gala
The North Carolina Tigers held their first annual "Post Season Gala & Awards Night" November 8th in downtown Raleigh, NC. It was a semi formal affair attended by all players and fans and their respective spouses/partners. It was a great opportunity for the entire club to get together away from the footy field and reflect upon the season that was. Head Coach Jason Heathcote compered the evening with President Wes McCallister also giving a speech about the season, particularly the success off field this year with recruitment and sponsorship. Intertwined in the evening was the presentation of awards; some serious and some not so serious. The highly popular Gag Awards were handed out along with the Special Recognition Awards. After dinner, the more prestigious awards were presented to the following players:

Coaches Award: Steve Miller
Most Improved Award: Ben Wetzel
Rookie of the Year Award: John Scull
Best & Fairest MVP Award: Ross Pleban

Ross Pleban became only the second American to win the Best & Fairest trophy in the ten year history of the club. Pleban performed consistently all year with an extra strong showing at Nationals. 3 players tied for equal 2nd place, all American's themselves: Wes McCallister, Paul Duncan, Alex Fincham.

The Gala capped off a great year for the Tigers. The club grew in numbers to record levels thanks to better recruitment efforts. Off field the club secured it's foreseeable financial future with additional sponsorships and improved budgeting. At Nationals, the Tigers had their best ever result, with the only loss being to a visiting Canadian club. All players are excited for season 2009 and beyond.

Tigers Create History at Nationals
Colorado Springs CO - Recently the North Carolina Tigers participated in the largest Aussie Rules football tournament in the world...The 2008 USAFL National Championships. The Nationals this year was the best of times, the worst of times! On field the Tigers showed a renaissance of enthusiasm for the game, a tough but fair determination for the ball, and an unyielding desire for victory. The club finished 2-1, only being defeated by an invited Canadian team, Calgary. This was the best result ever for the Tigers, beating 2 top 10 teams in the process. Away from actual play, the weather Gods threw everything at the boys. Sub zero temperatures, mixed with freezing rain, made for a long Saturday at the playing venue. Thankfully, everyone remained positive and displayed incredible team spirit. In fact, during one game when the weather hovered around 30 degrees, the Tigers shut out Milwaukee - not letting them trouble the score keeper for the entire game! It became fairly obvious (if not before Nationals) that these two team attributes go hand in hand. Because of Nationals the club has strengthened it's on-field reputation nationally and shone a light of promise upon season 2009.

Afterwards Head Coach Jason Heathcote made special mention of a few players; those of the club's first year players; "Albeit all 24 players played great, it was a consistent team effort brought about by the inexperienced players raising their level of play to match that of our experienced Tigers." The Tigers fielded an incredible 7 players at Nationals with no national experience: Mark Griffin, Cristian Skilone, Brian Steffy, Patrick Badolato, Ben Sweet, John Scull, Daniel Nordstrom. All preformed admirably and beyond their experience should dictate.

The Tigers finish the year with the best record in recent memory. More games were played this year. The highly popular Black v White guernsey games were extended, and numerous social events were a hit. The club formally concludes the year with the annual Post Season Gala & Awards night held November 8th. Tickets are now on sale at NCTIGERS.com.

Tigers Prepare for Nationals
With the 2008 Home and Away season over, the football club has set its sights on the USAFL National Championships. This year the Nationals are held in Colorado Springs CO October 11-12. The tournament promises to be the largest yet, with over 25 football clubs from North America in attendance. The combination of players, administrators, families and fans makes hosting the event a daunting task and this year most activities will be held at the United States Air Force Academy. The Tigers have begun their preparations for Nationals. Coach Jason Heathcote is instilling a greater sense of discipline in his young team that he hopes will create a strong bond amongst his inexperienced chargers. Practices have been well attended with only those players living outside of the Triangle area not attending the mandatory sessions. Heathcote has a tough job ahead with some difficult choices about playing time and line ups among the coaching tasks. 27 players have signed up for the trip, meaning players are now competing for playing time and recognition. The playing list represents old and new Tigers, with some playing their 5th or 6th Nationals, while for many this will be their first. The Tigers have played some encouraging football this season so the club is quietly confident this may be the year they break through for a Division title. There is only 5 weeks till the big weekend in Colorado. The club is stressing to all players to increase their workload and make the most of practices. At least one more intra club game is to be played before Nationals so that gives players another chance to experience the game, impress the coach and press for selection.
Tigers on Tour in New York City
Like any good garage band there comes a time when you have to take your show on the road. This past weekend a Band of Tigers loaded up the 15-person van and headed north to face two of the top teams in the USAFL. Meeting up with a few other Tigers in Yonkers, the team of nineteen strong first squared off against the Boston Demons and then faced the New York Magpies. Results were as follows: Boston Demons 7.9.(51) def. NC Tigers 4.0.(24) and New York Magpies 7.7.(49) def. NC Tigers 2.0.(12). --> Full Report

Black V White Clash!
Sunday, May 18th, marks the first of the Black V White IntraClub games to be played this year. The game will be held at the new ground for the 2008 Tigers season, Cedar Fork District Park in Morrisville, NC. It will be your first chance to see the Tigers at home as they break in the new ground and prepare for their first regular season game against Philadelphia on June 7th. Gametime is 2 PM.
New Season Is Here!
The Club recently announced the schedule for the 2008 season. More games should be added as the pre season continues, but currently the Tigers enjoy ten dates of football in 2008. The season kicks off with a possible tournament down in Florida, followed by a couple of encounters with familiar competitors. An updated schedule will be announced soon but already this season promises to provide the most football action the Tigers have ever witnessed. The club is also incorporating the successful Black v White jersey game which will be especially welcomed by the newer players joining the club. The full schedule will be announced and discussed at the first official practice, Saturday 1st March.
Mandatory Try Outs - The club is to the size now where players are competing for playing time. Saturday 1st March is the first official practice for the club for the 2008 season, but it also marks our first try out for the season. General football skill and fitness will be assessed by the coaching staff. Everyone will again be given the opportunity to play this year, but the coaches do want to focus on players positions at this try out to allow them, and the players, to educate and learn the position and what is required to be successful at that spot on the field. So come prepared to run, kick, and listen!
501c3: Non-Profit - The Board of Directors, led by Michael Jett in his role as Sponsorship Director, have brainstormed to further increase sponsorship levels. This year we are a 501(c)(3) CHARITY so any donations are tax deductible. The club is calling on all players to take it upon themselves to ask their network of associates if they would be interested in donating to the Tigers. We have an automated process in place to provide written acknowledgment of the contribution for tax purposes, so it has never been easier (or cheaper) to help the Tigers. The club is currently speaking to companies around town to secure primary sponsorship for the upcoming year. President Wesley McCallister has hefty goals in mind “Jett has provided more dedication and service to this cause than anybody prior, so we should see better returns than ever before.” Regardless, the Tigers are excited to embark on the challenge to grow the club off the field.
